On Thursday, March 22, I will be waking up bright and early to catch the 4:45 AM ferry, to make it to my 7:20 flight from Seatac…that’ll be an interesting way to start this trip! From Seattle, I’ll be flying to New York, where I’ll have a 7 hour layover. I’ll hopefully have enough time to make it into the city to see my friends Mimi and Greer, and see New York for the first time- a quick stroll through Times Square and coffee/dinner will be all I’ll have time for, I think. I’ll make my way back to the airport, and catch my 10:35 flight headed for Rome! Then, Friday at noon, I’ll arrive and start my 10 weeks as a student in Italy!
…this all seems so crazy right now. I’ve only ever been to Canada, and I’ve always flown with at least one other person. I’m about to be incredibly independent for the first time. I don’t know what to expect from Rome; I barely know what my course schedule will be like, let alone what I’ll be doing when not in class. So while I’m incredibly excited to be doing this, I’m also very, VERY nervous.
I should probably begin packing for this trip, though I’ve been told I really don’t need to bring that much. I just need to pack clothes and toiletries, a towel for if we go to the beach possibly, and a gift to give my host family in Calabria that represents Seattle. There are also still many people I need to say goodbye to…
It seems strange to be leaving everyone in Seattle behind. I’ve met so many amazing people at UW this year, and I’m worried the relationships I’ve formed with people that aren’t completely solidified yet will disappear when I return to the U in the fall. I’m hoping I can stay updated with people enough through Facebook/Tumblr that this won’t be a problem.
Well, that’s probably enough to get this blog started. I don’t know if I’ll have lots of time to update it, but I really hope that I can!
